Club Meeting Tues Sept 18 at 7:30
Posted by: MarkB - 09-14-2018, 11:19 AM - Forum: ETWC Posts/Threads - No Replies

John Tansil, a very early club member is putting together a history of ETWC and will be in town to share what he has found.  Reid Gryder will also be sharing some old slides from club trips from the 70's. It will be a great meeting for old-timers to reminisce and for new boaters to make connections and learn what trips will be coming down the road.

The meeting will be at the club house at the top of the hill within Greystone Apts on Solway Rd ½ mile from Hardin Valley Rd.

We will also meet and eat before the meeting at Grill Don Gallos on Hardin Valley Rd, 6pm. Call or Text Mark 865-679-9242 if you want to come eat so he can save you a spot.

For those that would like to car pool we will meet at Fort Sanders West at 8:00 am. If you plan to participate (beginners and experienced boaters alike) please let me know by replying to this post or emailing me by Thursday evening August 23. Also let me know where you plan to meet the group (FSW or the put-in).

Obed Wild and Scenic River Looking for Volunteer Citizen Scientists

Obed WSR to Launch a Citizen Science Pilot Program

Wartburg, Tennessee:  In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, the Obed Wild and Scenic River is launching a volunteer based citizen science pilot program.   A public meeting will be held on Monday, August 27th at 6:00 p.m. (E.T.).

The park was recently awarded a grant from the National Park Foundation that will offer a new opportunity for individuals and groups within the park’s watershed to work closely with National Park Service (NPS) staff to learn about water quality trends during runoff events.  Citizen science projects are valuable ways to improve stewardship and connect people to their local watershed.

The goal of this project is to educate volunteers and the public on the water quality conditions and current threats in the Obed WSR and determine the feasibility of continuing this pilot program into the future.  Data collected by volunteer involvement will supplement the park’s existing water quality monitoring program to help park management protect the watershed and increase the knowledge of user groups who enjoy the recreational activities this free-flowing river system provides.   The five proposed sites for monitoring this year are Potters Ford on the Obed River, Devil’s Breakfast Table on Daddy’s Creek, Clear Creek at Lilly Bridge and Barnett Bridge and Emory River at Nemo Bridge.

Please join us to learn more about how you can help protect your watershed and get involved with this new citizen science project.  The meeting will be held at the Obed Visitor Center, located at 208 North Maiden Street in downtown Wartburg.

For more information, please contact Obed Wild and Scenic River at (423) 346-6294.

Hiwassee Trip CANCELLED Sunday August 19th (not enough water)
Posted by: april_morton - 08-19-2018, 08:43 AM - Forum: ETWC Posts/Threads - No Replies

The Hiwassee trip needs to be cancelled for today, Sunday August 19th. We just checked the Appalachia Dam website and it says that they are only releasing 1000 cfm (1 generator until further notice).

  August 18 Beginner's Trip
Posted by: Zinggds - 08-14-2018, 10:56 PM - Forum: ETWC Posts/Threads - No Replies

This weekend's beginner's trip will once again take place on the Nantahala River.  The plan is to meet at the Patton's Run put-in between 10:30 and 11:00 am.  Boats will be unloaded and the shuttle will be run.  If you plan to participate (beginners and experience boaters alike)  please communicate your intentions by replying to me (zinggds@gmail.com).  If there are no replies the trip will likely be cancelled.

If the trip is a go, there will be a group meeting at Fort Sanders West at 8:00 to carpool to the Nantahala. Again, if you don't communicate that you want to participate in the carpooling and you are late we may leave without you. Traditionally, we eat dinner at the NOC after paddling, if you participate in the carpool you need to keep this in mind.

A couple of notes for boaters who have never paddled the Nantahala, 1) a pass is required to paddle the river.  If you are driving yourself to the Nantahala you can pick up a pass at Brookside Campground or the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) the cost is $1.00 for the day or $5.00 for the season.  We can also pickup up day passes at the NOC when we run shuttle.  2) the water is cold and unlike the Hiwassee, most of the paddling is in the shade.   Regardless of the air temperature, very warm clothing is necessary.

In summary, if you are going to participate you need to let me know preferable by Thursday evening August 16, I also need to know if you plan to carpool. Finally remember you need WARM (non-cotton) clothing.

Hope to see you this weekend.

Hiwassee Trip this Sunday August 19th (In addition to Saturday Nantahala)
Posted by: april_morton - 08-14-2018, 12:07 PM - Forum: ETWC Posts/Threads - No Replies

Hi All,

We're thinking about organizing an additional beginners trip this weekend to the Hiwassee on Sunday, August 19th (there will also be a Nantahala trip - likely Saturday).

If you're interested, please respond to this email or call me at 909-859-5542.

We'll only run the trip if we have enough safety boaters (right now we have a few intermediate safety boaters who are interested - but at least one experienced boater would be appreciated).

If the trip runs, we'll plan to meet at the take-out at 10:30 AM. Please email me if you're interested in carpooling.

Hope to see you this weekend!
