Nantahala Trip for 7/20
Posted by: Darren Price - 07-15-2019, 09:17 AM - Forum: ETWC Posts/Threads - No Replies

I will be leading this weekend's beginner's trip which will take place on the Nantahala River in western NC.   The plan is to meet at the Patton's Run put-in by 11:00 am.  Boats will be unloaded and the shuttle will be run.

If you plan to participate (beginners and experienced boaters alike) PLEASE communicate your intentions (no later than Thursday evening) by replying to this post or by phone/txt msg to eight 65 seven 42 4136.   If no interest is shown, the trip will likely be cancelled.

If the trip is a go, there will be a group meeting at Fort Sanders West at 8:00 AM to carpool to the Nantahala.  We usually remain at the NOC after the trip is complete to eat dinner and as such we get back late (typically 9:00 PM).

A couple of notes for boaters who have never paddled the Nantahala, the water is cold and unlike the Hiwassee, most of the paddling is in the shade.   Regardless of the air temperature, warm clothing is necessary.  Secondly, all boaters must have a river pass.  River passes can be purchased at various outfitters or the NOC.  Prices have increased from last year, I know the season pass is $10, not sure about the day passes (last years cost $1 that has likely increased to $2).  The carpool group will stop and purchase river passes prior to arrival at the Pattons Run put-in.

Thanks
Darren Price

2019 Hiwassee Clinic Video Uploaded to YouTube
Posted by: Francis - 06-18-2019, 08:53 PM - Forum: ETWC Posts/Threads - No Replies

Hi All,

Below is the link to the clinic video on YouTube. I apologize that the lens was foggy at the beginning--you cannot make out some paddlers. At least the weather improved later on the trip. I was also not able to capture the first two groups at Three Chutes rapid. The groups dispersed more this year than last year, and after I waited for the fourth group to go through Oblique Falls, there was not enough time to catch up to the first two groups at Three Chutes.

I had a blast making the video though, and I hope you enjoy it too!

Hiwassee River Beginner Trip, Saturday, June 22
Posted by: Francis - 06-17-2019, 11:48 AM - Forum: ETWC Posts/Threads - No Replies

Hi All,

Bill Lewis and I will lead this weekend’s beginner kayak trip on Saturday, June 22 on the Hiwassee river. If you want to participate, please respond by email or this announcement on the forum. We will need safety boaters as well. Recommended meet-up locations are shown below. Let Bill or me know where you will be meeting us. We will try to consolidate as many boats at the take-out as possible. For those who need to leave their cars at the put-in, there is a $3 fee.

 • Fort Sanders West parking lot, 8:45 am (Francis)
 • Foothills Mall, Maryville, outside the former Sears building, 9:15am (Bill)
 • Hiwassee river take-out, 10:30 am
For those who are interested, we can eat at Flip Flop Burgers near the bridge in Reliance afterwards.

Hopefully I will have the clinic video posted before the trip...

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Francis
